new Vortex Viper

Postby texgal338 » 12 May 2010 17:31

Recently got the Vortex Viper 6.5-20x50. Took it to the range today.

The glass is very clear, zooming thru the range is smooth.

The side parallax control worked very well.

The clicks for elevation and windage are positive; this scope uses turret caps for elevation and windage.

Got the wide v-plex FCH reticle, was well defined.

The only thing that I didn't care for is that the sunshade takes a smaller objective cover than does the scope.

So the sunshade isn't flush with the OD of the ocular bell?

Was the side parallax turret marked? Were the markings anything close to accurate?

no, the sunshade is a bit smaller than the objective

markings on the side parallax are well defined and are pretty accurate

Hey TG, how much do they retail for?

People ask me all the time for a good affordable scope.

A few questions, if I may:

1) Can you compare the glass to a few other scopes that you have experience with?

2) Weight/length?

3) Illuminated reticle? Tube diameter? FOV at 100? Eye relief?

4) Best feature?

5) Anything you would change?

6) Worth it for the money?

1) Can you compare the glass to a few other scopes that you have experience with?
This isn't as good as my USO scopes, but I would rate it better than the Burris Black Diamond I have

2) Weight/length?
Length = 14.4" Weight = 21.6 ounces

3) Illuminated reticle? Tube diameter? FOV at 100? Eye relief?
This model doesn't have the illum reticle; 30mm tube; 17.4-6.2 ft FOV @ 100; eye relief is 3.3-3.1 inches

4) Best feature?
Nothing I would say is super neat; the controls are positive and easy to use

5) Anything you would change?
Nothing I would change for the purpose I got it for; F-T/R shooting

6) Worth it for the money?
Yes, I think it's a good value for the money.

It has 68 moa internal for both elevation and windage.

Further; if you want either mil/mil or moa; step up to the Viper PST or the Razor

One thing that would be nice for Vortex is to change is the max magnification. Or having the 3-12 viper be mil dot. (it might be 3-12 or 4-12, i'm not sure.)

More elevation adjustment might be nice too... though I can not wait till I have the chance to get one of these scopes...
