Cheekpieces

Postby Todds69 » 26 Jul 2010 20:39

I am looking at a McMillian A5 for a Rem700SA Project. I noticed the Integral Cheekpiece and the Saddle Cheekpiece offered as a option and was wondering if anyone can tell me the purpose, pros/cons vs. one style over the other. Is it money well spent or is it better to get a aftermarket pad or make my own. Thanks

I prefer an adjustable cheek, I have a pretty big melon but getting a good cheak weld with some rifle systems just isn't possible without one unless you get a stock pack.

Ive used everything from field expedient cheek pads made from a towel and some 100 mph tape to aftermarket hard and soft cheek pieces to integrated ones on McMillans and McRee stocks.

If you're going for a HS stock, I would recommend the Karsten Cheek Piece. Its cheap and built like a brick @#$%. Karsten is also a helluva nice guy to work with. The downside, if you consider it one, is that you have to drill your stock. Personally, that doesnt bother me. Its a tool, just like anything else. You adapt it to your use, @#$% the looks. If its not an effective tool, you make it effective, or you ditch it.

If youre going built in/on...

McMillans integrated and saddle are literally 6 a one, half dozen the other. The only difference is looks. They both perform the same function. The saddle creates a natural cavity underneath it. Ive seen this cavity used as an E&E ammo source when operational. (You ditch your pack, you lose your rounds.) The integrated is a little smoother looking, thats its only advantage. Just a simple appearance of having less @#$% on the rifle.

If you're going soft cheekpiece...

Eagle and SO Tech both make them. Of the two, I prefer the SO Tech, bc it zips from front to back to open. When in position, thats easier for me. That is strictly opinion. My shooting buddy Wil uses an Eagle on his Manners. Works great too.

Thanks for the input ShaunB and Shaggy. I will probably get one preinstalled from McMillian. There website doesn't show the correct angles for me to get a better view of where your cheek contacts the piece. The saddle one looks as though it extends or protrudes out and the integral one looks as though it is just flat and moves up and down. Probably give them a call.

Yeah, I guess I should use proper terms so I don't confuse anyone especially myself. I understand the comb moves up & down. I am looking at the cheekpiece itself on how far if any it sticks out on the integral unit. I talked to some lady there today and played twenty questions with her. I also said they need a new web guy over to get better and more current pics posted. Might be someone her to help...hint hint. Thanks again Shaggy

I use a Karsten too. I installed it myself on my McMillan, bc I didnt think their saddle style went up high enough.
